Details
The Jaguar XJ220 was inspired by Jaguar’s incredibly successful sports racing cars from the 1950’s and 1960’s. The first prototype was shown at the 1988 British Motorshow held in Birmingham in the UK. The punters loved the car and Jaguar is understood to have taken a number of substantial deposits from prospective buyers. The mid to late 1980’s was a boom time for supercars. Ferrari introduced the F40 in 1987, Lamborghini had the Countach which was selling as well as ever, Porsche had the 959 and there were lots of bespoke companies, such as Vector, trying to get in on the act. The Bugatti EB110 and the McLaren F1 were to follow in the early 1990’s.
The XJ220 was initially presented as a 4 wheel drive with a thumping 6.2 litre V12 engine (that was developed by Tom Walkinshaw Racing). However, by the time the first XJ220 rolled off the production line in 1992 the car had undergone significant changes. The V12 engine was replaced with a twin turbocharged 3.5 lite V6 and the car was now rear wheel drive only. These changes polarised opinions back in the day, however, Jaguar delivered on their promise of building an incredible supercar that could hit a top speed of well in excess of 200 mph (they were hoping for 220 mph => XJ220 . . . ) and accelerate from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds!
Exactly how many XJ220’s were built is up for debate, but it is understood that the number is around 270 cars of which perhaps 70 were right hand drive.
Oldtimer Australia is excited to offer for sale a factory right drive 1993 Jaguar XJ220.
This car has come from a private collection and it is now reluctantly offered for sale. The odometer reads only 5313 miles and the car presents exceptionally well inside and out. The car has recently been serviced and ‘gone through’ by respected classic Jaguar specialists Mike Roddy Motors in Melbourne.
